Polarized sensors contain polarizing filters in front of the emitter and receiver that orient light into a single plane.  The receiver cannot receive light from reflective objects that did not depolarize the light. Thus such sensors can see a reflection from a reflector, and it cannot see a reflection from most shiny objects.  These sensors are applied to detect large objects, e.g. boxes, cartons, in a clean environment.  The sensing distance is usually in meters, longer than most other sensing modes.  Try to avoid to use such a sensor for precise positioning control or detecting small parts, because it is usually difficult to create a small effective beam and it has a blind zone at closer distance, typically 2.5 to 15 cm, from the sensor face.
